The Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics(ÚFAL) is associated with the Computer Science School of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague. The main expertise of the Institute is in the theoretical description of language structure and preparation of linguistically annotated corpora for research as well as commercial usage, tools for natural language processing, machine learning applied to inflective and other languages (Czech, Slovak, Polish, Swedish, also English and Arabic), machine translation between Czech and other EU languages.
The Institute participates in several ongoing research projects in the Czech Republic, the EU and the USA. The Institute coordinates its international Computational Linguistics, with more than 25 graduates in the past 10 years and over 20 currently enrolled PhD students. They actively participate on the research projects of the Institute. The Institute will contribute its data resources, especially in the area of parallel and semantically annotated texts as well as implemented tools, to the project.
